The Principal Estates Surveyor is a crucial member of the Estates Team, sitting within the wider Assets Function of South Hams and West Devon Councils.

The Estates team provide both a full asset management service to the Councils, as well as supporting the Councils’ Corporate ambitions most particularly through the delivery of its’ capital programme.

This role will have a particular focus on the strategic, timely and effective management of property and land related projects. The successful candidate will work closely with the wider Assets Team to support the delivery of the Councils’ capital programme which includes exciting and rewarding proposals and projects. These range from broadening the commercial investment portfolio through both acquisition and development of existing assets, coastal protection schemes, direct delivery of housing schemes and the management of public assets such as car parks, harbours and Community Assets including Public Realm and other Leisure assets.

The Principal Estates Surveyor will lead on all land related aspects of projects from commencement to completion, working with members, colleagues and other key stakeholders as required. This will include providing high-level advice and support across the organisation, making recommendations for appropriate action and include the preparation and presentation of reports to the Senior Leadership Team, Council and Committees. Furthermore, the Principal Estates Surveyor will seek opportunities across the Councils Assets to drive growth, efficiency and develop asset management strategies.

Therefore, the successful candidate will require extensive experience of project delivery and asset management. Areas of expertise and experience to include complex acquisitions (to include compulsory purchase) and disposals, valuations, landlord & tenant and planning matters.

The role requires the post holder to undertake regular site visits, inspections, surveys and associated meetings throughout the locality of South Hams and West Devon. This is an essential part of the role and attendance can be reactive and often required at short notice.
